bernardino visconti, pretending to be the ambassador of genoa, manages to enter the duchy of milan to meet with the girl he loves. he obtains many concessions and strengthens interesting diplomatic relations, but one of his bitter enemies, jealous of his successes, attacks him. bernardino kills him and casually kills even the father of his sweetheart. the girl, desperate, locks herself in a convent, while bernardino, gripped by the most bitter pain, becomes 'the knight without a name' or 'the unnamed one' of manzoni's memory.
