durante le guerre napoleoniche il capitano aubrey, combattivo marinaio della royal navy, e il medico di bordo stephen mauturin vengono attaccati dai francesi insieme al resto dell'equipaggio della surprise. con il vascello fortemente danneggiato e metà dei suoi uomini feriti, aubrey si lancia all'inseguimento del nemico dalle coste del brasile alle tempestose acque di capo horn e poi attraverso il ghiaccio del polo, fino alle remote coste delle galapagos.
