the marriage between nora and piero is in crisis due to their very different character, that the birth of a child does not help to improve. the man runs a clinic where a violinist courts nora. after an attempted suicide by the woman, serenity seems to have the upper hand, but the constant presence of the violinist (whom her husband surprises one evening when she leaves her front door) precipitates the situation. the man, mad with jealousy, kills his wife first then himself.
