a young man named raffi returns to canada with meters and meters of 35mm film, some digital videotapes and a secret. during a normal customs inspection, the officer in charge, a certain david, curiously decides to find out what raffi is hiding, who declares that in the containers there is only 'extra' material related to a film shot in toronto. however, david has suspicions and the interrogation turns into a real psychological examination that reveals fragments of their personal stories. raffi has to deal with the memory of his father and the contrasting reactions that this memory arouses in his mother ani, obsessed by a past she denies, and in her half-sister celia, who blames ani for her father's death. david is trying to understand and accept his son philip who has a gay lover, an actor named ali; he is also trying to build a solid relationship with his nephew tony. when celia accidentally wounds philip and ali is cast in an epic film in which ani and raffi are also involved, the fate of the two families is intertwined, culminating in the intense questioning to which raffi is subjected, on the nature of his mysterious merchandise.
