rome 1588, michelangelo merisi da caravaggio proposes himself as a painter in the papal city, passing very easily from the most black misery to the most splendid splendor and securing important orders through the help of highly placed persons; his work is appreciated, but because of a woman he kills a gentleman and is forced to take refuge elsewhere. it is in malta that he finds his most intense vein and several years later he is knighted; but his nostalgia for rome resumed him and, on the return journey, he died in the pontine marshes.
