on a sicilian island, a young woman who had had an intense love affair with a garrison officer, on her departure without giving any news of herself, had almost gone mad with disappointment. in a new garrison official, the girl believes she recognizes her lost love and the man favors her so as not to cause her a new crisis. little by little, piety turns into tenderness and love.
