a single mother leaves her native town and goes to milan where she meets a doctor who falls in love with her and marries her; soon, however, the man becomes impatient with his wife's past and bears a child who is not his. the young woman prefers to separate herself from the child by entrusting him to the care of the mother of her deceased, who has since died. but this sacrifice is greater than the forces of the girl who is soon taken by the irresistible desire to get the baby back: on the damp and foggy night, as she goes to the station, she is hit by a bus and then dies after being admitted to hospital.
