eight years after his father's sudden death, young sadao discovers that he is actually the son of the parent's first wife. chieko, the woman sadao believed was his mother, explains that he never told him the truth so as not to make him feel different from his brother kosaku, who was also unaware of everything. but the woman's words do not serve to console sadao and her relationships with her mother and brother are becoming increasingly difficult and sadao seeks refuge in the arms of mitsuko who works in a hotel in yokohama hours. meanwhile, relations between chieko and his son kosaku have also become more strained because his son cannot understand why his mother is always so open to her brother's whims. returning home and feeling guilty about his attitude, sadao provokes a new dispute with the intention of making chieko and kosaku reconcile, who is shocked to discover the true identity of sadao's mother. the latter receives, in the ambiguous hotel where he spends most of his time, chieko's visit, which is badly removed. scolded by a maid, sadao returns home and asks his stepmother for forgiveness. three years later the family moves to a suburban home.
