il cavaliere di san marco (1939)

during the risorgimento, a young venetian, affiliated with the 'carbonari' sect, went to parma to bring an important document. stopping overnight in an inn, he meets a beautiful woman he falls in love with, but his precious document is stolen; the woman has disappeared, the desperate young man goes to his research, but is chased by the police who have discovered in him one of the conspirators. back in venice he arrives just in time to collect the last breath of his dying father, seriously injured by a gunshot wound. before dying his father confides to him that he is the mysterious 'knight of st. mark', guide of the venetian patriots against the oppressor and therefore urges his son to take his place and continue his work.
