on the eve of the wedding, a young girl discovers from her personal records that she is already married, provoking the anger of her husband. the same happens to a young nobleman who is about to marry a judge's daughter. the case brings together the two 'fictitious' spouses when they go to their native country to check their marital status from the documents. misunderstandings, quarrels, misunderstandings, complicate the intricate skein more, until one finds the person responsible for all this confusion: to take revenge for wrongdoings suffered on the job, an employee of the municipality has altered the registers by marrying people who did not know each other, causing death others, changing dates of birth, in short triggering a real uproar. thus the verotà comes to the surface, but in the meantime the young people have changed their mind knowing each other: this is how the two spouses discover they are in love with each other, and the other two console each other.
