the young son of a venetian baker, nicknamed by all 'fornaretto', is found by chance at the corpse of a noble patrician and is accused of being the author of the crime. following the trial he was sentenced to death by the grand inquisitor of the venetian republic, but a patrician discovered the truth and denounced that the instigator was the instigator of the crime and that the poor young man was no more than a scapegoat. the real culprit, humiliated and discovered, takes his own life.
