The Mill on the River (1949)

in the lower emilia region, towards the end of the nineteenth century, as the first movements of revolt of the sharecroppers against the landowners were born and developed, the drama of berta scarceni, sister of princivalle and engaged to orbino verginesi, a farmer, was consummated. the sharecroppers, who have achieved nothing, almost in the form of revenge, take it out on berta and his family, who are responsible for having become estranged from the struggle. princivalle, to escape the tax, set fire to his mill and is arrested. once out of prison, believing orbino to be responsible for abandoning berta, he kills him and then sets himself up. the sister forgives him.
