an elderly porter from the port of lehavre, working until he was old, making countless sacrifices and saving on everything, was able to send his son to the university of paris. but in the big city the young man lets himself be misled by bad companies and soon, given the game, he ends up signing bills for a large sum. upon learning of this, the father returns to work in the harbor, citing as an excuse in his family that he had made wrong speculations and lost all possessions. the repentant son returns home and enlist as a sailor for a long journey during which, understanding the value of hard work, he completely transforms himself into character. serenity returns to the old parent's home when the money lender who owned the young man's bills dies tragically.
