colonel william ludlow has an abundant army and has retreated to a ranch built in an isolated area of ??the rocky mountains to raise his children in the greatest serenity. but life has in store for him an unfortunate number of surprises: the eldest of the sons, alfred, will become an ambitious careerist; the youngest, the idealist samuel, will have to sacrifice his young life on the altar of his country; tristan, the most beloved of the three, will consume his own parable with unpredictable gestures.
