nightjohn (1996)

shortly before the outbreak of the american civil war, when thousands of black men and women worked in slavery in the south, it was forbidden for them to learn to read and write, for fear that this might lead them to become aware of their condition. but when the young sarny meets the educated nightjohn, the latter risks his life and decides to break the law.
