taeko is married to mokichi, a company executive. the woman, bored by married life, goes with some friends and niece setsuko to spend a couple of days in a spa resort. on his return to the city he must think of his granddaughter's marital future. setsuko, however, does not want to know about an arranged marriage and does not appear at the first official appointment with the possible husband. when she returned home, mokichi scolded her but then, understanding her reasons, took her to the velodrome with her friend noboru. in the evening they are both scolded by taeko, who, feeling increasingly distant from her husband, decides to leave for a while. the next day mokichi receives the news that he has to leave immediately for a business trip in uruguay and sends a telegram to his wife who does not show up at the airport. back home a few hours later, taeko is scolded by her friend aya and her niece setsuko. however, the same evening, due to a plane crash, mokichi returns home. while watching him eat green tea rice, taeko realizes he has misunderstood the true qualities of her husband, her simple and natural lifestyles, and confesses her faults. the next day, he will tell setsuko and his friends everything. even noboru, walking with setsuko, reveals his love for a life made of simple things to the girl.
