in 1937 in palermo, tommaso scalia commits three murders in a single day. he kills the superior who fired him first, then the man who took his place at the professional and artists fascist confederation and, finally, his wife. arrested, scalia claims his guilt before the court of assizes and calls for the death penalty. but the judge on the sidelines, vito difrancesco, uses all the possible loopholes offered by the penal code in order to avoid the accused death penalty.
