the young and bearded okajima, who practices martial arts and knows the ancient dances of japan, is invited to a party. while going there, he saves the timid hiroko from an attempt of aggression made by the perfidious satoko and some members of his gang. during the party okajima arouses the antipathy of the landlady, ikuko, who cannot bear either the beard or the antiquated ways. despite numerous attempts, okajima cannot find work. hiroko suggests the solution: cutting his beard. after leaving the barber shop, okajima is hired by a tourist agency. without a beard he is almost unrecognizable and in addition to the timid hiroko, the snobbish ikuko and the perfidious satoko end up falling in love with him. the first gets rid of a rich suitor, the second tries to involve the young in the theft of a pin. the intransigent okajima does not give in to temptations and locks satoko in his apartment to foil the shady plans. unfortunately, ikuko and her mother arrive and obviously misunderstand the situation. only hiroko trusts okajima. satoko, who has learned his lesson, leaves the two alone and leaves, determined to change his life.
