the suspenseful story of a conscientious new york psychiatrist, sam foster, and his feverish attempts to prevent henry lethem, an introverted and extravagant patient, from committing suicide, which the young man planned for his twenty-first birthday. behind the main story, however, lies a far more disturbing and surreal mystery: henry's analysis in fact begins to have a disruptive effect on sam's reality. the psychiatrist is increasingly ensnared in henry's life, and then in the labyrinth of his consciousness.
