in the spring of 1836 about two hundred civilians who believed in the future of texas occupied a military fort for thirteen consecutive days, strongly opposing the thousands of soldiers commanded by general antonio lopez de santa ana, dictator of mexico. led by three men, the young and exuberant lieutenant colonel william travis, the solicitous and passionate james bowie and the legendary david crockett, these texans lost their lives for their ideas, but their exploits to alamo remained famous in the history of independence of the texas. six weeks later general sam houston retaliated the massacre by leading the charge during the battle of san jacinto.
