the heart is deceitful above all things (2004)

a story of a reversed childhood, seen through the eyes of a child, jeremiah, and his mother, sarah, a lively and impulsive young woman who prostitutes herself to truck drivers in the southern united states. jeremiah's constant movements: adoptive parents, strictly religious grandparents and his life without roots, on the road with sarah. continually forced to adapt to new and strange situations, to a series of "fathers" freeloaders and to the growing madness of his mother, jeremiah learns and grows; despite terrible experiences, he manages to preserve purity and candor in his enchanted way of looking at the world.
