it all starts when grace, a fourteen-year-old skilled horsewoman, is the victim of a serious accident falling from her pilgrim horse. the girl loses a leg and even the condition of the horse is so severe that it is thought to bring it down. but grace's mother, annie, who runs an important magazine, realizes that this would make her daughter's pain unbearable. he decides to leave for montana where tom booker lives, one of those very rare people capable of healing these animals through understanding and love.
