in ireland in 1964 the magdalene institutes were managed by the sisters of mercy on behalf of the catholic church and hosted young orphaned women or women who had been removed from their families, imprisoned and forced to work in laundries to atone for their sins. four girls try to rebel against the violence and humiliations suffered by the nuns' nuns.
