alvin straight, seventy-three years old, lives in laurens, iowa, with his daughter rose. he learned that his brother lyle had suffered a heart attack, he decided to undertake a long journey, on board a 1966 lawn mower, through iowa and wisconsin, passing through mississippi: he had broken off relations with him for many years and now he fears he no longer has time to make peace. after six weeks and various contingencies, he will be able to reach it.
