the day after the wedding, hermann braun left for the war leaving his wife maria alone, who became the lover of an american soldier. when her husband returns from the front, maria kills her lover: hermann takes responsibility for her and ends up in prison, while maria becomes the lover of a french industrialist who will take hermann, once released, to canada.
