in 1833 giuseppe verdi left busseto, his hometown, to enter the milan conservatory, but he was not admitted because he was not considered suitable for musical studies. returning to his native town he married the daughter of his benefactor and shortly thereafter managed to present his first opera at la scala in milan. his later work, a comic opera, meets a big fiasco, while the poor musician is gripped by a great sorrow for the loss of his wife and two children. in desperation, verdi is determined not to compose anymore, but the tenacity of soprano giuseppina strepponi, of whom he is in love, makes him go back to work composing the 'nabucco'. thus he triumphs in triumph, he knows joys and successes, up to the thud of the opera 'la traviata' in 1853. but he does not give up, he re-presents the whistled work, obtaining a resounding triumph the following year, until becoming the emblem of italy of the risorgimento, and he the most applauded man of his time.
