gelosia (1930)

the marquis of roccaverdina passionately loves, loved in return, a peasant of his, but cannot marry her for reasons of caste; therefore, in order not to lose it, he marries her to one of his factors to which he swears that the marriage will never be consummated. a few months later the factor is mysteriously killed by a gunshot and suspicions fall on a farmer who is sentenced to life imprisonment. the true author of the crime is none other than the marquis, devoured by jealousy that the man had not kept faith with the pacts. shocked by remorse, he confesses to the parish priest of the country that urges him to constitute himself, but he, out of pride, refuses the council; in fact he decides to marry a noble girl who loves him but who will then realize the mistake he has made, that is to say that he has been married without love. the marquis, blinded by jealousy, haunted by the ghosts of an indelible remorse, upset by madness, dies alone and abandoned.
