during the spanish domination of naples, the son of the viceroy, in disguise, knows the sister of a populate, tommaso aniello, called by the neapolitans 'masaniello'. the two fall in love but, unfortunately, the girl becomes pregnant and when she gives birth to a baby she is forcibly locked up in a convent together with the baby. his brother masaniello, as soon as he became aware of the facts and discovered that the son of the viceroy is responsible for all this, and that, moreover, he is about to get married, seized with animosity, he bursts a revolt against the rulers. discovered the shelter of the beloved girl and of the child, the son of the viceroy refuses the marriage imposed on him by his father for political reasons and regularizes his position; the father makes the best of all these events and, by giving consent to the marriage, he manages to tame the revolt and appoints masaniello as captain general of the people.
