1930s: two young people, guido and ferruccio, full of naive hopes, leave the campaign to look for work in the city. thanks to his uncle, guido is hired as a waiter in a large hotel. falling in love with dora, a teacher unhappily promised to a fascist ringleader, guido kidnaps her on the day of the official engagement and giosué is born from their love. when the child turns five, war breaks out. guido, of jewish origin, is deported with the child to a concentration camp, while dora is interned in the women's camp. guido's task is to save the child, not only physically but also emotionally.
