le due madri (1938)

a peasant woman nursed a child entrusted to her when she was in swaddling clothes with maternal care; having grown well, the young man, after having been a barber boy, reveals a certain talent for painting and, thanks to the help of a patron, manages to exhibit his works in rome. it is on this occasion that he first meets his real mother, a former variety singer, who welcomes him into his home and introduces him to his environment. but the young man hardly tolerates the city, the social life, the mother's fatuous friends and has nostalgia for the country where he lived also because there is a girl there who loves. the spanish civil war breaks out and, voluntarily, leaves with a companion, but is wounded shortly after during a fight. back home, he returns to the village, marries his girlfriend and, when he is about to become a father, finds two mothers who are close to him with affection and understanding.
