the small kohei, left without anyone to take care of him, is temporarily entrusted to otane, a widow who runs a modest store. the woman has no intention of taking charge of the newcomer. at first he goes in search of the father and then tries to induce the child to escape, but his attempts do not give any result. one morning, after bathing the mat, little kohei flees in fear; the woman looks for him along the streets of the city, realizing that she now feels maternal affection for him. when in the evening the friend tashiro brings the child back to otane's house, a new relationship begins between the two. the next day, after buying him a cap, the widow leads the child first to the zoo and then to a photographer. that same evening, however, kohei's father returns to take the child. left alone, otane confessed, crying to her friends for her decision to adopt an orphan.
