andy dufresne, a bank accountant, is arrested and sentenced to two life sentences for killing his wife and lover. transferred to shawshank prison, andy soon finds himself confronted with the harsh rules of prison life and with the brutal sample of the humanity of the prison: a leader of sadistic guards, violent prisoners, a fanatical director. in a short time, however, it turns into a guide for other inmates: contracting some favors for them with the director, organizing a library and some education courses.
